For the past six months H2i, the Hatchery and including my lab DCSIL have been bringing together medical researchers, hospitals, health practitioners, industry and the health community to create HealthEDGE.
From experience we knew we needed many voices at the table to be able to give us different perspectives, especially expert knowledge about healthcare and it's ecosystem. Also from tons of hackathon experience and the truth that after the event is done, nothing continues with the ideas that are created. So the partnerships we created from HealthEDGE and have fostered would continue after the final pitches, such as the support from our accelerators and incubators to to help teams move forward with their brilliant ideas and from our industry and hospital partnerships to give access to hospital resources, experts and potential funding.
We started with collecting problems from all the stakeholders, including the community to post their problems and issues with the healthcare system that a potential solution can solve. We then had the public vote for the top challenges that teams could solve.
Here are the top challenges that came from the posts and some examples of solutions teams can explore.
THE CHALLENGES WE CHOSE TO CONCENTRATE ON:
We ‘experience’ healthcare as patients, parents, people, physicians, relatives, administrators. Organizing how we navigate the system, how the system manages us, is a complex and intricate process that is increasingly under pressure from an aging population, budget cuts and changes in technological, cultural and legal practices.
To keep up and ensure a viable and sustainable healthcare system in the future we must look at new creative ways to leverage ideas, knowledge and new approaches to healthcare delivery. We would like to CHALLENGE you to help INNOVATE healthcare by proposing and developing your ideas on:
Management & the Patient Experience;
From better tools to manage referrals, to appointment scheduling and coordination, to optimizing wait times and more efficient use of hospital resources and space, participants are invited to propose new solutions that will improve patient experience and healthcare delivery, while reducing costs.
Rapid Diagnostics & monitoring;
Through the application of new hardware, materials, software, data and analytics, and mobile applications current diagnostic tools and practices can be transformed to give faster, more accurate, or more efficient diagnoses or continuous monitoring of conditions.
Training & Culture;
The application of simulations, artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, robotics and haptics are opening up opportunities for better and more cost-effective training of healthcare professionals. The improvement of culture within institutions and the interpersonal and soft skills of the healthcare professional can also benefit from new training tools and technologies.
